"Pentecost 1991, we had a friend come to visit from Paris. We tried explaining to her where the Wall had been and its significance for the city. At the time, she was in her late 20s and struggled to imagine what things had been like. It was the first time she saw and experienced this system separation in person, and so concretely. There were already a number of places in Mitte where it was no longer possible to see where the Wall had stood. That made explaining the situation all the more difficult."
