A crowd in one of the Brandenburg Gate gatehouses, with a sculpture of the Roman god of war, Mars, during the opening celebrations of a border crossing at Brandenburg Gate on December 22, 1989. The ceremonial opening was carried out by former Chancellor Helmut Kohl and the East German premier, Hans Modrow, and attracted hundreds of camera teams and over 100,000 spectators.
