Memory

"It was very exciting watching what was going on at the Brandenburg Gate. The square was crowded with people who wanted to witness for themselves the removal of the first sections of the Wall before it would be opened by leading politicians the next day. Workers loosened parts of the Wall with pneumatic hammers, and then a section of the Wall was lifted over to one side. After midnight the great moment finally arrived: the first opening had been created at the Brandenburg Gate. Applause from the East and the West accompanied the noise of the hammers and cranes. It was overwhelming. A night I’ll never forget."

Dietmar Bührer (West Berlin, born 1947)
