The initiative "Bürgerinitiative Deutsche Einheit" (BDE) ("Citizens' Initiative for German Unity") emerged from the "International Society for Human Rights" (ISHR) which counted many GDR migrants among its members. The BDE was founded in Schleswig in January 1990 in order to support the opposition in the GDR on its path to reunification.
