Memory

"Everything looks the same as always. People are dancing and enjoying themselves. But my suitcases are packed and I have a permit to go to 'Berlin (West)' in my pocket. Many of my friends are already over there, others are toying with the idea. It seems the pull is irresistible.

One last time, I mingle with the people and record the scene on film: all the blue shirts and uniforms, the standard paper flags, the rhythmic clapping, and kazachki of the Russian folklore group. I was sure this would be a farewell for a long time. Little did I realize I would meet all these people six months later on the Kurfürstendamm."
