From 1950 - 1969, the Ministry for State Security used the building at 10 Collegien Strasse as a detention center. The prison was also used as a place of execution from 1950 - 1952. After the new building at 53 Otto Grotewohl Strasse (now 11 Robert Havemann Strasse) was completed, the Ministry for State Security moved in and consigned the old building to the People's Police (Ministry of the Interior) who continued to use the prison as a detention center until the demise of the GDR. After reunification it was converted into a memorial and documentation center; a part of the building presently houses the city music school
